The Attempted and Pointless Banning of Machetes

by Dr David Barton

OK, so here we go again – we all know by now that if politicians are unable to address a real problem, well, they’ll just ban something! And as a part of that, they’ll just punish a whole range of otherwise innocent people to boot. It’s a tried and tested formula to score political points, even if it’s totally ineffective.

Machetes or ‘large chopping knives’ have been common place in Australia for well over 200 years. They are very useful in many applications, not the least of which is chopping back overgrown blackberries. But now various righteous holier-than-thou, and ignorant uncaring point-scoring commentators claim “no-one needs to have a machete”! Rubbish! So every person in Victoria who owns a machete for legitimate purposes will now be made to feel like a criminal.

To paraphrase an old expression, ‘machetes don’t chop people; people chop people’. You’d think that’s so obvious it would hardly need to be said, so why, just in the last decade or so in Australia, have people (youths) started chopping up others with machetes? Again, it’s obvious. We know that machetes are the weapon of choice amongst savage marauding black Africans, or dare we not say that either. We know, for a fact, that machete attacks have been imported into Australia from highly dysfunctional civil war torn black African states, which now form tribal gangs in the streets of Melbourne, so why can’t we just say so?

Shadow Police Minister David Southwick appeared on Sky News’ Steve Price show on Friday, 7/3/2025, spruiking his ‘great idea’ for “banning machetes” because of the rise in home invasions and street violence. How can Southwick (and Price, but that’s not unexpected) be such superficial fools?!

– Why are politicians not talking about immigration policy (notwithstanding a Federal issue) and what people our governments let into this country?

– Why are politicians not talking about who these criminals actually are (mostly black Africans, although some Asians as well) and which country they’re specifically from?

– Why are politicians not talking about the imported tribal wars these gangs are fighting?

– Why are politicians not naming and shaming them and their families?

– Why are politicians not talking about these criminals lack of respect for us and our society?

– Why are politicians not talking about improving our education system, teaching ethics, morality and respect (rather than transgenderism and fake Aboriginal history)?

– Why are politicians not talking about having these criminals instantly locked up – no bail whatsoever, and heavy long-term sentences?

– Why is there is no discipline, no enforcement, no effective punishment for these criminals.

– Why are politicians not talking about deporting these ungrateful criminals back to their countries or origin, and their families with them, who are obviously unable to control their children?

– Why are politicians not taking some real action rather than just another stupid ‘ban’?

To talk about ‘banning’ even more so-called ‘weapons’ is just foolish. As our society continues to decay under decades of ‘multi-cultural’ policies and a misplaced sympathy for ‘refugees’ (simply a quiet invasion), Australia was always going to get to this point of societal collapse. Almost everyone could see that coming; the ‘weapons’ used to bring it about are largely irrelevant!

Even the normally sensible Peta Credlin has come out in support of the proposed machete ban (Sunday Herald Sun, 9/3/2025, p21) most likely due to it being promoted by her Liberal Party friends, but how sad, how short sighted, and dare I say, how stupid. Yet three more pages in, on page 24 of the same paper, there is an article about the knife murders in Melbourne, five knife murders in six months, and guess what, all related to black or Asian gangs! No surprises there, but farmers and campers in rural Victoria will no longer be allowed to own a machete without a ‘genuine reason’ – there’s even talk of an ‘international import ban’ and a machete ‘buyback’ – how stupid!

On the 8th of February, Labor Minister for Police and Minister for Crime Prevention, Anthony Carbines, stated in his Second Reading speech for the FIREARMS AND CONTROL OF WEAPONS (MACHETES) AMENDMENT BILL 2024, that “The Bill amends the definition of controlled weapon in section 3 of the Control of Weapons Act 1990 by inserting an example stating that a machete is a type of knife.” At least this is not an outright ban on machetes, as being called for by the misguided Liberals!

The Minister continued:

Machetes are knives and are therefore controlled weapons. However, there is a misconception by some people in the community, including by some market stall holders and other retailers as well as some members of the public, that machetes are tools and are therefore not weapons. The amendment, inserting an example in the definition of controlled weapon stating that a machete is a knife, makes the legal status of machetes very clear – they are controlled weapons and, as such, may not be possessed, carried, or used without a lawful excuse. The amendment is purely to provide clarity and does not alter the existing legal status of machetes.

And yet the Minister continues to make an oft-repeated error of fact (not to mention common sense). He states it a “misconception” that “machetes are tools and are therefore not weapons”. This is absurd misdirection; of course a machete is inherently a tool, not a weapon, as is a hammer, but any machete or hammer can be used as a weapon. By definition, anything can be used as a weapon. The Minister, as do many other commentators, misuses both the words ‘tool’ and ‘weapon’.

Nevertheless, as with guns, knives, machetes or whatever, it’s NOT THE WEAPON stupid! It’s what’s happened to our society, and that’s something it would appear that all politicians are utterly unable to address, let alone even be willing to talk about!

It’s the disintegration of the ‘social contract’ of community, not often understood or appreciated by non-Judeo Christian cultures. It’s the lack of respect for others. It’s the breakdown in trust, in friendliness towards one’s fellow man! It’s the allowance and promotion of ‘tribalism’, that’s what it’s all about! And all of these things have got to do with a clash of cultures – cultures that are not compatible with each other, especially Muslim culture which is diametrically opposed to our own Judeo-Christian culture. Why are we not talking about that?

How can Australia bring in people from a war-torn country like Somalia who have grown up with this kind of violence all their lives, where hacking at each other with a machete is common place, and not expect the same thing to happen here? And all our idiot politicians can talk about is ‘banning machetes’ – seriously, how can they be so ignorant, so bereft of ideas and so stupid?

And how about talking about the need to upgrade our self-defence laws so we can adequately defend ourselves against these imported and even now, home-grown criminals? What about that? Why do we insist on being defenceless victims? No-one should have to live in fear like this – especially when it is a situation that has been directly caused by government policies of immigration and ‘multi-culturalism’, and a failure to promote and create a cohesive and integrated society!

So why not start talking about these issues – the REAL issues, and don’t waste your silly breath talking about banning machetes. All that says to long-suffering Australians is that you and your party are totally bereft of any ideas of how to deal with this situation that you have created and inflicted upon us – and, it should be said, totally without our consent.

Seriously, if the Liberal and National Party’s want to win the next election, they’d better lift their game and stop treating the public like such fools. Rather than their usual ‘let’s get tough on crime’ mantra and their ‘let’s be tougher than Labor’ rhetoric, why not come up with some REAL and long-term solutions that actually admit to and address the real issues, and stop hiding behind pointless ‘bans’!

This is yet another clear example of just how ill-equipped our politicians are to deal with the many issues facing our society today, issues which they themselves have in large part either created or allowed. A totally unimpressive performance all round!
